If you previously received free NHS prescriptions under the ‘M’ tax credit exemption, there’s an important update you need to be aware of.
What’s changing?
The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) has removed the ‘M’ tax credit exemption as a valid exemption type. This means anyone who had this marked on their prescription account will now be automatically switched to a paid status.
What do I need to do?
You’ll need to act if this change affects you. Here’s what to do next:
-
Check if you’re still eligible for free prescriptions. In many cases, patients who previously claimed tax credit exemption may now qualify for exemption under Universal Credit instead.
-
Update your exemption status. If you're still exempt but under a different reason, such as Universal Credit, you’ll need to update this information before your next prescription.
-
Start paying if you’re no longer exempt. If you’re not currently eligible for free prescriptions, you’ll now need to begin paying the standard NHS prescription charge.
How do I update my exemption?
You can update your exemption status or begin paying for prescriptions directly through your account on our website or through the Chemist4U app. Head to your account settings and look for the exemption details or payment section. If you need help, our support team is always happy to guide you through the process.
